About Keni Banda
Keni is a Zimbabwean born musician based in the UK. While he played guitar as a hobby in Zimbabwe, it was during his time in the UK that he started to compose and perform music on a professional level. Growing up in Zimbabwe, Keni was exposed to a diverse range of music local and international. Keni reflects diversity in the music he creates. You can look forward to more great music from Keni.
Zimbabwe reggae and Bob Marley
The message that Bob Marley left to humanity has been a significant influence in my song writing.
In 1978 Bob Marley released a track called Zimbabwe, in which he foretold that Africans would liberate Zimbabwe. In 1980 Zimbabwe became an independent country and Bob Marley performed at the first independence at the invitation of the new Zimbabwean government.
Unfortunately, I was only a young boy at the time and could not attend Bob Marley’s concert. There was a lot of excitement from my older brothers and their friends, and a generation of Bob Marley and reggae music fans was born. It was only much later when I became older that I truly began to appreciate Bob Marley and the greatness and relevance of his message.
To this day, reggae music and other genres originating from reggae are common in the urban music scene in Zimbabwe.
